Like many new moms, Jackie Dorris was eager to get back to her pre-baby weight.
Unfortunately, that became a huge challenge when Dorris tried to find a workout platform that would allow her to take her daughter along. A mom-and-baby class proved disappointing, but when Dorris discovered Fit4Mom, she decided to take her fitness needs into her own hands and discovered a new career in the process.
Fit4Mom (formerly Stroller Strides) designs workouts with moms in mind, allowing them to bring babies and toddlers to class. Classes are usually held in a local park or community center.
Dorris loved the program and company — especially the mom-centric approach — and decided to open her own franchise in 2007. She was attracted to the chance to stay on top of fitness trends through continuing education, and the low start-up costs (around $5,000 for a single territory). She also loved that the franchise allowed her to have a career without needing to rely on childcare because her kids can tag along!
After just a short time of opening her first location, Dorris began expanding (turns out lots of moms loved the concept, too!). Dorris now has 15 fitness instructors — all independent contractors — teaching classes year-round. During the warmer months from May to October, teachers focus on outside activities. Classes move inside the rest of the year to escape the harsh Chicago winters. Classes usually have 15 to 20 moms, but can swell to as many as 35.
“I gained so much more than an income,” Dorris told CNBC. “I truly believe you have to have passion for what you are doing.”
